Sustainable Village Ecosystems restoration project
Supported by Terramatch under World Resources Institute (WRI)
Our Climate Action Commitment
- Target: Plant 100,000 trees by 2027 in Makueni County.
- Already achieved: 110,000 seedlings planted by April 2026.
- Focus: Mobilizing youth, women, schools, and PWDs to lead grassroots climate solutions.
The Challenge Makueni’s forest cover is only 7.4%, below the 10% minimum. Deforestation and drought have led to crop failures, water scarcity, and economic losses. Climate change directly impacts livelihoods, especially vulnerable groups.

Our Solution – Sustainable Village Ecosystems We are establishing five village ecosystems in Kiteta/Kisau Ward, each led by trained climate champions. These ecosystems will:
- Trained 1,950 environmental champions by 2025.
- Established 10 community tree nurseries with climate-smart practices.
- Planted and nurtured 100,000 seedlings under Terramatch by 2025.
- Develop eco-friendly enterprises (e.g., energy-saving stoves, bamboo crafts, beekeeping).
- Created 15 Ecosystem School Clubs to instil conservation values in children.
Outcomes
- Increased forest cover and restored ecosystems.
- Improved water access and reduced burden on women.
- Enhanced resilience of vulnerable communities.
- New green enterprises for youth and women.
- Stronger community ownership of climate action.
Partnerships & Sustainability AAE collaborates with government, CIFOR-ICRAF, KFS, KEFRI, NGOs, schools and churches. We align with Kenya’s National Tree Growing and Restoration Campaign to raise tree cover to 30% by 2032.
