Amplifying Community Voices for the SDGsIntroduction

Ahadi Achievers Empowerment CBO (AAE), based in Makueni County, partnered with the SDGs Kenya Forum during the Global Week of Action (#Act4SDGs) to raise awareness and mobilize communities around the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The Challenge
- Many rural populations in Makueni remain unaware of the SDGs.
- Poverty levels stand at 34.8%, with women, youth, children, and persons with disabilities most affected.
- Unemployment among youth (24% of the population) is high, exacerbating vulnerability to climate change and COVID-19 impacts.
Our Objectives
- Hold People’s Assemblies to amplify voices of marginalized groups (women, youth, PWDs, elders, clergy, local leaders).
- Conduct awareness campaigns on SDGs and the role of government in addressing poverty and inequality.
- Develop community demand charters for policy action.
- Participate in National and Global People’s Assemblies to feed grassroots voices into global SDG discussions.
- Document and share impact stories through videos, photos, and case studies.
Activities
- Grassroots assemblies in Kiteta and Kisau Sub-Wards.
- County-level dialogues with administrators and the Governor’s office.
- Social media campaigns using hashtags #PeoplesAssembly2022 and #GreatRecovery.
- Distribution of SDG awareness materials (brochures, t-shirts, caps).
- Local radio and vernacular media engagement to reach wider audiences.
Expected Outcomes
- Increased community awareness of the SDGs.
- A demand charter calling for action against poverty.
- Stronger government responsiveness to grassroots concerns.
- Amplified voices of marginalized groups integrated into national and global SDG platforms.
